What is Holistic Medicine? Common Questions Answered – A Practitioner’s Guide

River City Wellness 8 February, 2022
What is holistic medicine? Learn from a licensed holistic practioner

Most of us can remember learning about the “body system” in elementary school. We learned that cells are the building blocks of tissues, which form organs, then whole organ systems. We learned about the digestive system, of the gall bladder and stomach and large intestines; the respiratory system, of lungs and trachea and the nasal passage.

But what school failed to teach us, as Western medicine in general often fails, is how each part of the body is deeply connected, interdependent of each other. We know how each system works, but not of how much they actually affect each other. By compartmentalizing and separating health conditions between different doctors, specialists, psychiatrists, and medical practitioners, there’s no understanding of the bigger picture, the subtle ways that physical, emotional, and spiritual health overlap.

That’s where holistic medicine comes in. Rooted in principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), holistic medicine is an approach to healing that considers the whole of a person–mind, body, and spirit. Holistic practitioners seek to provide care that reaches all interconnected parts of the body. We believe that when one sphere of your person is in imbalance, the whole suffers–and that optimal health can be met through achieving and maintaining an internal equilibrium.

What does holistic medicine actually do?

Simply put, holistic medicine is about you. Instead of just treating symptoms or waiting for a disease to get worse, we aim to address the root causes of illness to improve your entire wellbeing and quality of life. Your holistic practitioner will take into account your entire, unique condition, including past/ongoing ailments, medical procedures, social environment, nutritional information, mental health, and more. We believe that the body’s natural healing properties are far more powerful than we realize, if channeled properly.

What are some examples of holistic medicine?

Holistic medicine consists of many different safe and effective treatment options that are often used simultaneously. Acupuncture, aromatherapy, cupping, herbal remedies, massage therapy, homeopathy, and moxabustion are a few examples. Holistic medicine also includes the incorporation of lifestyle changes, such as exercise recommendations, dietary supplements, meditation, yoga, counseling, and more.

Does holistic medicine work in conjunction with conventional (Western) medicine?

Absolutely. Many holistic practitioners actually employ and suggest conventional forms of medicine, while many doctors encourage alternative medicine. There is no “right” way of using holistic medicine–you can integrate whatever works for you!

That being said, many people find themselves turning to holistic medicine when conventional medicine fails, or they want to avoid invasive procedures or pills. Many people who suffer from chronic, ongoing pain find significant relief in holistic medicine. Holistic medicine can also be far less costly, safer, and more effective. By serving the whole you, we can address different conditions at once.

What are some conditions that can be treated by holistic medicine?

  • Pain and inflammation, such as that caused by arthritis, spinal problems, tendonitis, fibromyalgia, joint pain, nerve pain, sciatica, diabetic neuropathy, sprains or strains, and sports related injuries.
  • Tinnitus
  • Fatigue
  • Allergies and seasonal allergies
  • Respiratory conditions such as cough, asthma, bronchitis, cold/flu, sinusitis, and ear infections
  • Smoking cessation
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Adrenal fatigue
  • Stress
  • Insomnia
  • Chronic Illness
  • Mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety
  • Gastrointestinal conditions, such as slow metabolism, poor digestion, weight gain, heartburn, gas, bloating, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, IBS, colitis, and Crohn’s disease.
  • Hypertension
  • Infertility and women’s health issues
  • Headaches and migraines

Even if you’re not suffering from a specific ailment, holistic medicine can be used to bolster overall immunity and reduce the chance of future diseases. You can easily integrate holistic practices and lifestyle changes into your everyday routine.

How do I find a reputable holistic practitioner?

Finding a holistic practitioner who is professional and certified through a credible organization is very important. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and do thorough research. Get referrals from your friends and family. Make sure that the person you choose is trained or specializes in what you’re looking for. Most importantly, see how they talk to you. Do they ask a lot of questions? The best holistic practitioners will spend a significant amount of time getting to know you–your diet, lifestyle, emotional state, sleep, etc. They more they ask about you, the better!
